SMOKING VOLCANOES | BALI TO BROMO
8 Day East Java Expedition
Far from the familiar tourist tracks of Bali, through the volcanic heartlands and the smoking peaks of East Java, this 8-day ride takes you deep into Indonesia’s untamed interior. We’ll carve our way through twisting mountain passes, quiet rural farmlands, and timeless traditional villages as we journey toward the iconic peaks of Mt. Bromo and Ijen. Along the way, you’ll experience the raw power of the land, riding off-road across Bromo’s vast Sea of Sands, then trekking under the stars to reach the glowing summit of Kawah Ijen at sunrise. Each day unfolds a new perspective, from the earthy scent of morning rain on jungle roads to the echo of your engine rolling through ancient volcanic valleys. This is not just a route, it’s a passage through the heart of Java, where adventure, culture, and connection meet on the open road.

Next we’ll venture inland and upwards making our way up the lush hillside roads towards slopes of Mount Batukaru where we will stop for a moment to stretch our legs, and breathe the fresh mountain air. Then we will continue our ride toward the serene northern villages of Munduk where we will have a short trek to cool off in a secret waterfall, followed by a traditional Balinese lunch. Day 3 – Crossing Over
We begin our second day’s ride along Bali’s quiet north-west coastal highway, through the dry monsoon forests and mangrove-fringed shores of West-Bali National Park toward Gilimanuk harbor where we’ll board the morning ferry across the Bali Strait. This short and scenic crossing with views of mountains rising in the distance is a unique cultural experience all on it’s own. Once ashore, we continue through East Java’s serene countryside, passing through rice fields, small villages, and winding stretches of forested hills. Around midday we pause for a laid-back lunch at a local warung nestled by the roadside. Good food, shade, a well deserved breather before continuing onward through wide open landscapes and rural backroads, finally arriving at our next destination.

Day 4 – Ambulu to Cemorolawang
We begin our fourth day’s journey riding east through small rural villages and along quiet stretches of coastal roads towards the lush foothills of the Bromo–Tengger volcanic highlands. The morning starts with warm air and open farmland bordered by teak and acacia trees before the road gradually rises into greener, more shaded terrain. As we climb higher, the scenery transitions into dense mid-elevation forests of bamboo and evergreen trees, with coffee plantations scattered along the slopes. The air cools noticeably as the route winds upward through misty montane forests filled with tall pines and tree ferns, a clear sign that we’re nearing higher altitudes. By afternoon, the vegetation opens into sweeping grasslands and sparse mountain pines as we cruise along the Bromo ridgeline with stunning views of the valleys below. The day concludes at our beautiful highland accommodation, surrounded by crisp air and impressive panoramic views

Day 5 – Bromo & The Sea of Sands
After several days on the road, today’s ride invites a well deserved change of pace and a deeper connection with this incredible landscape. From the steps of our ridgeline resort, we’ll explore the surrounding area, descending into the vast Tengger caldera where volcanic backdrop gives way to the otherworldly expanse of the Sea of Sands. The ride across its ashen plains offers an exhilarating sense of open freedom — a striking contrast to the paddy fields and lush forests of previous days. For those seeking an extra dose of adventure, an optional climb to the crater rim awaits, where panoramic views of Mount Bromo and the surrounding peaks stretch endlessly across the horizon. By afternoon, we return to our mountain retreat — a secluded haven of comfort and calm set among the misty ridgelines — to unwind, enjoy a warm meal, and recharge in the cool mountain air.

Day 6 – Cemoro Lawang to Jember
Today’s ride takes us across the top of East Java’s highlands with a challenging yet rewarding route through the mountain backroads. The morning climb winds up along rugged stone tracks, cutting through misty valleys and terraced farmland where locals tend to their crops of potatoes, cabbage, and shallots on impossibly steep slopes. Village life here moves to the rhythm of the mountains — earthy, quiet, and deeply connected to the fertile land. By midday, we’ll take a well-earned break at a charming family-run dairy farm known for its fresh organic produce and warm hospitality. From there, the route begins its descent, trading the cool air of the highlands for the warmth of the lowlands. As we roll closer to Jember, the pace quickens and the scenery shifts from open countryside to the lively pulse of small-town Java — a vibrant contrast that signals our return to the bustle of daily life after a day spent adventuring among the clouds.
Stay: 4 Star Hotel, Jember

Day 7 – Jember to Licin
We begin our seventh day’s ride with a bountiful buffet breakfast and relaxed departure, taking the time to savor the morning light as we pass through quaint traditional villages nestled among terraced farmland and quietly flowing irrigation channels. The roadside agriculture here shifts to coffee and cloves, and the slopes are lush with small-scale plots, banana trees and shade-grown crops, a gentle reminder of how local life grows with the land. Today’s ride is relatively short in distance by design as the goal is to arrive to our destination early and rest ahead of tomorrow’s early morning summit adventure. We’ll roll into our homely accommodations with the afternoon still to unwind, allowing time to settle, recharge, and prepare for the crisp pre-dawn climb ahead.
Stay: Premium Bed & Breakfast, Licin
Included Meals: Breakfast & Dinner
Day 8 – Sunrise Kawah Ijen
Our final day begins long before dawn, as engines hum quietly to life at 3 a.m. and headlights cut through the cool mountain mist. The ascent toward Kawah Ijen is a steady climb through volcanic slopes and ancient forest, where the air grows sharper with altitude and the stars seem close enough to touch. This mountain is a marvel of geology as its crater holds one of the world’s largest highly acidic lakes, an otherworldly turquoise basin fed by underground sulfur vents that glow blue in the night due to ignited gas emissions. Few places on Earth offer such a rare and surreal sight. As the first light breaks over the horizon, the view from the rim is nothing short of breathtaking and well worth the extra effort to get there.
The Home Stretch
After the descent, we return to our serene mountain hideaway tucked beside a quiet river, where a hearty breakfast and steaming coffee await in a rustic yet refined setting. With hearts full and spirits high, we make our final journey back across the Bali Strait, tracing familiar roads to our finish line back in Kedungu. The tour concludes as it began — with ocean breezes and good company — cold beers in hand, laughter in the air, and a shared sense of accomplishment that only an adventure like this can bring.
