BATU KARU ORIGINS

Tour Overview

It comes as no surprise that over the last few decades, Bali’s economy has become increasingly reliant on it’s fast growing tourism industry, however it’s fertile landscape offers so much more than the postcard images we’ve come to expect on popular social media feeds. On this full day tour we have the chance to explore the grass root origins of a few of the island’s most sustainable products such as coffee beans, cacao and salak (also known as snake fruit due to it’s scaly outer skin) and also get a chance to meet the farmers who’s hard working hands bring them to our tables.

Mount Up & Rideout

We begin our day by warming our engines and setting out from our home base in Canggu, weaving through both narrow village backstreets and rural farmland tracks, observing traditional morning routines of the local people along the way. The only toll here is a wave and a smile.

Through the Fields

There is certainly no shortage of scenic landscape views along our route and we will keep a slow and steady pace as we explore the intricate network of Southern Tabanan’s narrow farm tracks. Here we’ll take a moment to stretch our legs and soak up the spectacular views of terraced paddy fields for as far as the eye can see.

A Spirited Estate

By mid-morning we will arrive at our destination, a grand estate situated on the forested slopes of Batu Karu and will be greeted with cool towelettes and welcome drinks. Here we have the opportunity to tour the facilities and discover that it surprisingly houses a world class distillery and produces a very high quality local spirit. Although perhaps still a little early for a tasting we will surely enjoy a sip or two in the afternoon.

Rainforest Romp

After being given a brief history about the property and surrounding region we will prepare for our leisurely stroll into the rainforest. The shade provided by the 300 year old canopy will be the perfect relief from the mid day sun. Along the way we will discover the regions natural resources and learn about the many practical and medicinal uses of the local flora.

Lunch & Product Journey

Around mid afternoon we’ll emerge from the rainforest and a freshly prepared lunch will be waiting for us upon our return. After subsiding our hunger we will then be taken on a journey to discover the origins of the local products that are farmed here such as coffee and cacao. For our dessert we will treat ourselves to a rich hot chocolate ceremony which will surely taste all the more sweet knowing it was grown right here in the soil under our feet.

On the Road Again

Around mid afternoon we’ll bid farewell to our hosts and ready ourselves to once again mount up on our trusty steeds. From here we will ride back down through the foothills of Batu Karu enjoying the gentle roller coaster of twists and turns and scenic farmland views.

Finish Line – Canggu

Back to our home base in Canggu just in time to enjoy sunset at the beach while sipping a fresh young coconut or an ice cold beer.
