SKYROADS OF ZANSKAR

Journey Into The Lost Kingdom

This eight-day expedition traces one of the great high-altitude circuits of the Indian Himalayas, linking Manali, Leh, and the remote valleys of Zanskar. From the forests of Manali, the route passes through the Atal Tunnel into the stark rain-shadow landscapes beyond, threading deep river gorges, long gravel sections, and isolated high-altitude valleys. Crossing soaring mountain passes including Pensi La, the journey follows ancient trade routes through the borderlands of Ladakh and Tibet, with time to explore Leh and an optional ascent toward Khardung La. Demanding, remote, and profoundly rewarding, this is a ride shaped by altitude, distance, and some of the wildest terrain the Himalayas have to offer.

Day 1 – Arrive Manali (50 km)

Landing at this airport is a thrilling experience on its own. We’ll be waiting for you at the gate and transfer you to Manali where cedar forests, alpine slopes, and the rushing Beas River mark the edge of the lower Himalayas. After arrivals and introductions, we prepare the bikes and head out for a short test ride through the surrounding valleys, with distant snow peaks hinting at what lies ahead. As evening falls, the atmosphere shifts from relaxed to expectant — tomorrow, the road begins its steady climb.

Day 2 – Manali to Keylong (80 km)

The journey truly begins as we climb out of Manali and pass through the Atal Tunnel, emerging abruptly into the dry, rain-shadow landscapes of Lahaul. Green forests give way to rock, ice, and wide glacial valleys, with braided rivers cutting through an open, high-altitude landscape that feels vast and exposed. Flowing mountain roads and big scenery define the day.

Day 3 – Keylong to Padum (160 km)

Today we push deeper into the mountains, riding narrow roads and long gravel sections that follow deep river gorges into the remote Zanskar Valley. Vegetation thins to hardy grasses and scattered shrubs as barren slopes rise on either side, emphasizing the isolation of the region. The sense of remoteness grows with every kilometer as we arrive in Padum, the cultural and geographic heart of Zanskar.

Day 4 – Padum to Kargil (110 km)

Leaving Padum, the road climbs steadily toward Pensi La, a high mountain pass framed by snowfields, glaciers, and broad alpine basins. From the pass, the descent leads into the Suru Valley, where the landscape softens and greens return in the form of flowing rivers, pastures, and cultivated fields. The contrasts of the day highlight the immense ecological diversity of the region.

Day 5 – Kargil to Leh (212 km)

We ride east along a historic route that has linked Central Asia with the Indian subcontinent for centuries. The terrain alternates between exposed rock formations and fertile river valleys, with poplar-lined villages and ancient monasteries punctuating the landscape. By late afternoon, we roll into Leh, set beneath a crown of barren mountains.

Day 6 – Leh (Rest Day)

A rest day in Leh provides time to recover and acclimatize while exploring the cultural heart of Ladakh. Optional rides climb toward surrounding high passes, while time in town offers views over the Indus Valley, with its irrigated fields, apricot trees, whitewashed stupas, and wide desert plains stretching beyond.

Day 7 – Leh to Sarchu (250 km)

Leaving Leh, we cross vast high-altitude plateaus where the road runs straight toward distant peaks under enormous skies. Multiple high passes, changing weather, and thin air make this one of the most demanding days of the expedition, rewarded by sweeping views and a deep sense of space. We finish the day at a remote camp in Sarchu, surrounded by silence and stars.

Day 8 – Sarchu to Manali (175 km)

The final ride delivers a fitting finale, crossing high passes before descending through dramatic terrain and shifting ecosystems. Cold desert slowly gives way to grasslands, forests, and river valleys, marking our return to civilization and the close of an unforgettable Himalayan circuit.
